The results of each AKT exam are reported as the percent correct and a standard score. The standard score is calculated based on the performance of the reference group of residents for the exam. Table 1 identifies the reference group for each exam in the series. The standard score has a mean of 500 and standard deviation of 100, with most scores falling between 200-800 (3 standard deviations below and above the mean). Additionally, a table with normative data is provided for each exam which can be used to correlate standard scores with the associated percentile ranking, again based on the national reference group for the exams.
In the norm tables, the percentile rankings associated with various standard scores are provided in five-percentile intervals (5th, 10th... 95th, 99th percentile).
Standardized tests have limits to their precision (i.e., test/retest performance of the same candidates); therefore, providing percentile rankings in one-percentile intervals implies a level of significance for small differences in performance that is beyond the actual precision of the test.
Additionally, a single standard score may be associated with several consecutive percentiles because the number of candidates who achieved that score can exceed 1 percent of the candidates taking the exam. For example, if the reference group had 1000 candidates and 400 achieved a standard score of 500, 4 consecutive percentile scores would be associated with this standard score since each percentile (representing 1% of the sample) can include only 100 candidates (1% of 1000). If this range represented the 50th-54th percentiles, no performance difference would exist among the candidates from the 50th to the 54th percentile since they all achieved the same standard score.

For all exams, the reference group is limited to anesthesiology residents in programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada who are taking the examination for the first time. |
